5 Foods That Naturally Improve Your Mental Health and Energy

It is so simple to forget how the things we consume can sometimes make or break our days.

It may not be immediately apparent, but what you eat may make you feel happier or more balanced.

You don’t need anything fancy for your mind and body to benefit. Most of what you need is probably already in your kitchen or just down the street.

Here are five foods that can quietly support your mood and energy, in ways you might start to notice bit by bit.

How Food and Mood Connect

So before we dive into that, it is good to know what exactly goes on between our stomach and our brain.

There is a specific connection, known as the gut-brain connection, that explains how food can really set our mood.

When your stomach feels happy and satisfied, so will you in your mind. You may feel low in spirits or experience a dip in energy when things become a tad amiss.

1. Fatty Fish

Fish like salmon, sardines, or mackerel are filled with something called omega-3s.

These good fats help your brain run more smoothly in tiny ways that can leave you a little clearer headed or calmer.

Ways fatty fish may help:

  • Quietly support your mood

  • Make it a bit easier to focus

  • Help you rest a little better

  • Ease periods of stress

Even if you add fish every so often, it’s a nice start. If fish isn’t your favorite, a spoonful in a salad or sandwich can be an easy way in.

2. Dark Leafy Greens

Leafy greens like spinach, kale, or collards are beneficial. They also contain a good amount of folate and magnesium, which can help in mood stabilization and help one feel relaxed.

You may add more greens by:

  • Blending some into a smoothie

  • Stirring into soups or pasta

  • Wrapping up your lunch in big lettuce leaves

  • Mixing into eggs or grains

3. Berries

Strawberries, blackberries and blueberries are filled with beneficial compounds such as antioxidants.

These assist your brain in silently guarding it and even assisting in memory.

Simple ways to use berries:

  • Mix into yogurt or cereal

  • Scatter over oatmeal

  • Grab a handful of these to munch on

Frozen berries work fine, too. They can be used in smoothies or easy desserts.

4. Nuts and Seeds

Having a few nuts or seeds can be soothing in terms of boosting your mood throughout the day.

An example of this is walnuts, which have their form of omega-3s.

In chia and pumpkin seeds, you’re going to bag more minerals because of the magnesium and zinc ones your brain likes.

How you can get these in your diet:

  • Grab a handful of fruit

  • Add chia seeds to yogurt

  • Sprinkle pumpkin seeds over salads

  • Spread almond butter or other nut butters on toast

5. Fermented Foods

Fermented foods are commonly referred to as yogurt, sauerkraut or kefir.

They also contain good bacteria, and a small amount can help your gut, which can, in its turn, improve your mood and even your energy.

If you’d like to try these:

  • Add a spoonful of yogurt to your breakfast bowl

  • Try a taste of sauerkraut or kimchi with lunch

There’s no need to rush; small amounts are just right.
